Be Totally
Free! is a non-profit organization focused on helping people overcome
not just one, but all addictions, obsessions and compulsions. This
help is provided by people who have actually overcome many various
addictions, themselves.
The philosophy
underlying Be Totally Free! is that all addictions and emotional
troubles are manifestations of inner turmoil. They are actually
symptoms of unexpressed feelings such as resentment, guilt, self-doubt,
and fear, which often plague a person for years. Unless these emotions
are addressed in the light of love and truth, and a person actually
learns and practices new ways of relating to others and to the environment
around them (a process completely facilitated by Metasteps), the
symptoms of addiction and obsession, in one form or another, will
relentlessly persist.
The inspiration behind Be Totally
Free! is a man named Roy Nelson, who has made it his life’s
work to help others safely address the hidden issues that keep them
in bondage to addiction. He personally developed Metasteps after
applying the principles inherent to it while overcoming every imaginable
obsession and compulsion himself, including compulsive overeating,
morbid obesity, alcoholism, dependence on medication, smoking, sex
addiction, depression, panic attacks, phobias, shame, guilt, and
an overall sense of worthlessness. Instead of struggling to overcome
each individual addiction, with extraordinary insight, courage,
and determination, he actually successfully overcame his entire
addictive personality. Following his recovery over 30 years ago,
he began to offer the experience of his personal journey to others,
guiding individuals through a specific process of self-discovery
and self-mastery. In 1988 Roy helped a woman named Tricia Greaves
to have an immediate turnaround in her life. On account of her success,
she wanted to help Roy carry the message of hope to others. Together
they offered this help at a grass roots level only. In 2000 Tricia
formally named this process Be Totally Free! and began to market
it internationally (through the website) and nationally and regionally
through radio, television, written media and informational seminars.
After going
through an initial written qualification process (see Personal Evaluation)
and phone screening, it will be determined whether Be Totally Free!’s
“Intensive Track” or Teleclasses are right for you.
You will then be invited to engage in a series of spiritually-based
(non-religious) “self-esteem coaching” sessions and
workshops either in person, or via the Teleclasses. During this
process you will begin the recovery process called Metasteps. Metasteps
will help you to evaluate various aspects of your difficulties.
As you embark on a gentle and closely-guided, honest “stock-taking”
of your life, you will be empowered to discover hidden emotions
and unhealthy behavior patterns that are keeping you in bondage
to self-destructive habits. You will be supported every step of
the way in using various exercises of writing, reading, meditation,
and prayer to facilitate the process of healing.
It is a unique method developed by
Roy Nelson called Metasteps, which literally means “beyond
steps.” The most simplistic description of Metasteps is a
spiritual process combining the principles of the 12-steps and metaphysics.
Often people who have “worked” the 12-steps in various12-step
programs, or who have received many forms of therapy and treatment,
still have many deep-lying problems of fear, anger, resentment and
low self-esteem (not to mention a reoccurrence of their addictions.)
They may have intellectually grasped many good concepts, but this
didn’t translate into real change in their way of living and
thinking. When they go through the process of Metasteps, they find
complete change in their thought and behavior patterns. What makes
Metasteps so effective is that it is not just an intellectual study
or process, but something that is spiritually delivered with very
deep, unconditional love, making its effect penetrate at a core
level, where the problem lies. Only when healing occurs at this
level can a person truly have new life experiences.
It is not unusual for a person to experience
relief from his or her addictive behaviors after just one session.
An individual’s results will ultimately depend on his or her
willingness to learn, and to apply what he or she learns in daily
living. The sooner he or she applies the principles learned from
Be Totally Free!, the sooner he or she can expect to experience
improvements in all areas of his or her life. Metasteps is a very
personalized process which places the responsibility for recovery
on the individual. There is no quota of activities to complete,
no regimen to follow, and no grades or certificates awarded. Be
Totally Free! provides the information, instruction, and opportunity
for limitless growth and freedom from all difficulties. Remember,
there is no time limit on spiritual growth and the realization of
one’s true potential!.
Depending on your willingness to truthfully
explore issues beyond the obvious addiction, these sessions will
bring immediate relief and comfort. Troubled emotions which were
trapped inside for years will find healing expression and automatically
be replaced with a sense of calm and serenity. These consultations
will shed light on many problems which will become surprisingly
easy to solve. Instead of seeing yourself as a victim in your life,
with no way out, you will be empowered to identify new choices and
alternatives for action which will help you to create a happier,
more peace-filled life. You will awaken each day with a new-found
sense of hope as you eagerly discover and honor your true feelings,
desires, and talents. In addition, you will find a new ability to
speak up and ask for what you want out of life, bringing about many
exciting gifts and new, limitless abundance. Best of all, the compulsions
and obsessions which had formerly plagued you will disappear—only
to be replaced by positive, life-affirming actions that will bring
joy and peace to you and to all those who will have the pleasure
of knowing you.
Yes, there certainly is! The whole
philosophy behind Be Totally Free! is that any given addiction is
a symptom of a deeper, underlying problem; without addressing the
deeper issues and changing the way one thinks and lives, it is only
a matter of time before a person goes back to the old addiction
or has to seek relief from the pain in a substitute addiction. To
be totally free, both from the underlying pain, and from all of
the addictions, without needing a substitute, is the result one
can expect from Be Totally Free!.
Definitely! The founder of the
Metasteps process, once crippled by panic attacks, phobias and depression,
has overcome all of these problems, and has helped countless others
to do likewise. Just like addictions, such difficulties are also
symptoms of unexpressed emotions and inner turmoil, all of which
can be addressed and healed throughMetasteps.
Those of us who have recovered through
this process have experienced, first hand, the untold benefits of
facing the negative side of our natures. When we were denying our
feelings of unhappiness and trying to “just get over it”
or “cheer up and have a positive attitude,” we found
that our problems got progressively worse and harder to forget.
In accepting that we have problems, we have been able to face them
head on and have come to experience total freedom from them.
It would be hard to imagine anyone
who does not have some kind of residual emotions from their distant
or more recent past that have gone unaddressed, and therefore end
up manifesting in the form of an undesirable habit. The majority
of people with such issues and habits, however, live fully functional
lives, and never have need or occasion to take deliberate action
to overcome them. Those of us who have found freedom through Be
Totally Free!, on the other hand, while having been functional,
experienced a certain depth of despair—a mental anguish from
buried emotions and debilitating habits—that could no longer
be avoided and which gave us a burning desire to find a way out…one
of the necessary qualifications for those who receive help through
Be Totally Free!..
No, not at all. Spirituality
essentially means discovering and learning to live by the creative,
powerful, loving Spirit within you. Or put another way, the process
of becoming authentically you! In our experience, a person who retreats
into the world of fear and addiction is driven by negative emotions
and faulty belief systems. Typically included among these error
beliefs is misinformation about the nature of God and one’s
relationship to God and religion. (For example, believing that God
is vengeful and punishing, and waiting to "catch" us doing
wrong.) Without addressing all of these fundamental belief systems,
most of which were learned at a very young age and therefore run
extremely deep, that person will not be successful in breaking free
from his or her problems permanently. Metasteps is designed specifically
to help a person actually examine and break free from ALL of these
faulty belief systems and discover the truth about himself or herself.
By doing this, the healing spirit of love—for oneself and
others—is unleashed from within, bringing about total health,
happiness, and an abundant array of positive life experiences.
The most
important difference is that this process will work for a person
for whom nothing else would! People who could not recover by any
of the above mentioned methods and believed themselves to be hopeless
have found freedom through Be Totally Free!. Other distinguishing
aspects of Be Totally Free! are:
a) Traditional treatments view the particular
addiction or emotional defect as the problem itself, and see stopping
it as the solution, or “recovery.” Be Totally Free!,
on the other hand, is based on the truth that all addictions and
emotional difficulties are outward symptoms of a deeper problem.
They are a manifestation of the way one feels about oneself, as
well as how he or she thinks and lives. The reason focusing only
on the symptom (or trying only to get the addiction under control)
is not a true solution is because the underlying need for relief
derived from the addiction has gone unaddressed. This explains
why so many people who quit an addiction, after the initial euphoria
and “pink cloud” stage wears off, end up with a host
of emotions and problems which leave them feeling unhappier and
more discouraged than they felt at times when they were still
active in their addiction. They were led to believe that they
were in recovery when they stopped the destructive behavior (by
getting sober or losing the excess weight, etc.); but after some
time has passed and the insanity in their lives continues (often
times with a vengeance), they come to realize that they are anything
but “recovered.” When this happens, disillusionment
sets in. Consequently, relief is sought in their former addictions,
although usually not before they have tried a number of substitutes.
Unfortunately, this merry-go-round is all too common and, without
a way out, will most likely continue for a lifetime.b) Another reason this process is so unique
is that its development was based on the personal experience of
someone who used its principles to successfully overcome every
conceivable addiction and emotional handicap. This process and
the support provided come from personal, practical experience,
not from theory. There is a level of honesty, safety, and hope
that a person feels knowing that he or she is confiding in someone
who has not only felt the same way, but has also overcome the
same problems and has helped hundreds of others to do the same.
Also, this person has the experience of overcoming ALL addictions,
not just one or two. The uniqueness of such support is not available
through any other means.
We believe that the core of
one’s addiction stems from numerous faulty beliefs, especially
deep-seated misinformation about God and one’s relationship
to God. While the 12-step program leaves a person to formulate their
own conception of God, it does little to assist a person in honestly
evaluating and uprooting the old beliefs, and in finding more effective
ones that will work to overcome any problem. Therefore most people
end up accepting the conceptions of God they learned as a child.
To expect different results from such beliefs, however, is a simple
error in judgment, for these old beliefs were chief contributors
to the addiction and misfortune we experienced in the first place.
Even those who choose a new concept are usually unaware of how deeply
rooted the old beliefs really are and how they are still having
a negative effect on their lives (remember the saying, “you
can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the
country out of the boy!”?). So common and overlooked is this
dilemma, that many people end up either slipping back into their
old addictions or substituting new addictions; they continue to
accumulate problems in their relationships, work, finances and health….and
never come to understand why.
If you
are a person who has exhausted many avenues in an attempt to overcome
your addictions and emotional problems, only to find that they continue
to resurface in one form or another (like so many of us prior to
discovering Be Totally Free!), you may be in a position to embrace
this unique philosophy. The most important qualities that candidates
for Be Totally Free! should possess are: a burning desire to be
totally free from the addictions and emotional turmoil; a willingness
to work hard— to do whatever it takes to be free; and most
importantly, an attitude of complete "teachability" and
open-mindedness, with a willingness to learn.
Yes. If a person has not yet
made the connection between his or her addictive behaviors and unhappiness
with problems which stem from inside oneself, chances are this process
will not be what he or she is looking for. For example, if a person
thinks that he or she overeats because of loneliness, and that the
solution to that loneliness is to get more socially active, then
social activity is what he or she needs to pursue. If, on the other
hand, a person sees the loneliness as a result of an overall sense
of fear and distrust in people, for instance, or a subconscious
need to attract self-destructive, addictive relationships into his
or her life and he or she is despairing of ever being able to break
this pattern, despite ample awareness and even an intellectual understanding
of why he or she feels the need for it, then Be Totally Free! can
offer a solution. The Intensive Track (in-person help) would not
be right for someone, if he or she is looking to use Be Totally
Free! as an “adjunct” to therapy, medication, or any
other kind of program. From our personal experience of trying hundreds
of methods among us (unsuccessfully) to stop the deadly obsessions,
compulsions and general unhappiness from which we suffered, Be Totally
Free! is not one way to be totally free, it is the only way. If
you believe that what you are already trying is working for you
(meaning, you are getting the results you desire), or if there are
things besides Be Totally Free! you have not yet tried but believe
might give you the results you are seeking, we wholeheartedly encourage
you to pursue those first. In that case, you would certainly benefit
from taking our "Transformational Teleclass" series. You
are welcome to use the Teleclasses as an adjunct to other things
you are doing. If you come to the point where you feel that you
are not satisfied with the results from your efforts and the methods
you have tried, and you are sincere about finding a better way to
live, then you may be in a position to embrace the philosophy, engage
in the work, and partake of the extraordinary healing laid out in
the Metasteps process provided through the "In-Person"
help we offer.
First of all, the majority of
those who have been helped through the Be Totally Free! process
have also “tried everything and failed.” You are actually
in the best possible position to benefit from this process. When
a person perceives that something else, whether it be a therapy,
retreat, book, or medication, can help to overcome his or her problems,
we recommend and encourage that he or she follow that avenue first.
It is when a person has tried all of these avenues and is still
without the solutions that he or she seeks, that he or she is most
receptive to the help offered through Be Totally Free!. We have
found that when a person believes that his or her case is “hopeless”,
there is actually the greatest hope of recovery through Be Totally
Free! With the right attitude, you cannot fail.
