There's more ahead, but for now, have a great
week, and don't forget to take care of YOU!!
Love, Tricia

I am a 43 year old woman with an eating disorder. I've
been bulimic for 25 years now, starting when I was 18. I went
to treatment when I was 20, but I still continued to purge. I
always thought that I'd grow out of it or that I'd
stop when I became a professional, got married, etc. Well, I've
done all that, including having 2 kids, but I'm still bulimic
and purge at least once a day. I'm so sick of living this
way. I live a double life and it is tearing me up inside…literally
and figuratively!! After trying so many treatments over the years
I should know better. Why can't I stop?
~Desperate in Dallas
Dear Desperate:
Unfortunately, your situation is very common. Most of the people
we help are those who have had an eating disorder for many years
and have tried everything to stop. Eating disorders don't go
away on their own! Often they transmute themselves from Anorexia,
to Bulimia, and then to general overeating and obesity. Whatever
the symptom, the fundamental obsession with food and fat persists
and calls all the shots. The problem is that we learn to live with
our eating disorder and "get by" by wearing a mask and
leading a "double life." The guilt of this double life,
in turn, perpetuates the need to punish oneself with food and purging.
People DO die from eating disorders regularly, but prior to death,
we lead lives of deep despair, loneliness and self-abuse. Your experience
proves that you can't break f*ree on your own, so you MUST reach
out for help. The most effective help comes from those who have been
where you are, and are now f*ree. Be Totally F*ree!'s intensive "in-person" help
in Los Angeles, as well as our Teleclass series, Breaking
F*ree From Emotional Eating will help you begin a process of
addressing the underlying pain and shame that is driving you to eat.
We care and we want to help!

This subject hits close to home…my beloved Father died at
age 64 of esophageal cancer.
Heartburn—that burning sensation rising from the pit of your
stomach to the back of your throat, often lodging behind your breastbone—was
considered just a harmless nuisance until studies in the past several
years linked it to a deadly esophageal cancer. Researchers have found
that people with heartburn once a week or more have a fivefold or
greater increased risk of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, whose
rate of occurrence has jumped as much as 500 percent over the past
four decades. (About 85 percent of esophageal cancer patients die
within five years, according to the American Cancer Society.)
Experts insist, however, that adenocarcinoma is still rare. About
40 percent of Americans have heartburn once a month, yet only 8,000
to 9,000 develop the cancer every year, says Nicholas J. Shaheen,
MD, director of the Center for Esophageal Diseases, and Swallowing
at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. "Even
with heartburn, the chance of getting it is very low."
Heartburn is caused by stomach acid creeping into your esophagus.
When it's persistent, doctors typically consider it a sign
of GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (which is usually diagnosed
from symptoms that can also include regurgitation and difficulty
swallowing; confirmation may require tests like an endoscopy). Five
to 15 percent of people with GERD symptoms one or more times a week
develop Barrett's esophagus, a change in the cells lining the
esophagus that results from chronic acid reflux, according to Shaheen.
A tiny subset—about .5 percent—of patients with Barrett's
go on to develop adenocarcinoma each year. But a new study provides
hope for those unlucky few, suggesting that surgically removing the
cancer along with part or all of the esophagus and nearby lymph nodes
may dramatically up the odds of survival.
"If you get a little heartburn after a rich meal once in a
while, it's ok to self-treat," says Shaheen. Over-the-counter
drugs like Maalox, Zantac, and Prilosec can take care of most mild
cases, and a recent review at Stanford found that sleeping with your
head elevated can tame reflux pain. If the burning sensation arises
on a more regular basis, or you have trouble swallowing or start
vomiting, it's time to see a doctor, who may suggest prescription
drugs and surgery, or a holistic doctor, who should suggest a change
in lifestyle and diet. Although scientists don't yet definitively
know whether treating acid reflux reduces the risk or cancer, it
sure will make your life less miserable.
