In this issue: A psychologist’s own healing…a social worker’s new tact…Tips for Stress-Free Eating

Welcome

Talia and Roy

It makes sense, doesn’t it? No one is immune to pain, so often healers themselves grapple with their own demons. It’s difficult to admit to struggling when one is revered and admired for his or her work of healing others.

Recently an eating disorders therapist admitted her own eating disorder and through seeking help from Be Totally Free is on a very fast road of recovery. I asked her to share her inspirational story here:

******************

About 4 months ago the mother of an eating disorder client I had terminated treatment with contacted me. She asked me to use my rapport with her daughter to introduce her daughter to Roy Nelson, a man who was known for working with people who have unsuccessfully “tried everything” (this woman had tried every form of treatment to help her daughter recover).  Though the client was not able to accept the help that was offered when I made the introduction, I surprisingly was!

I am an eating disorders psychologist who has worked in the field for several years and has worked at some of the most reputable treatment centers around. Roy and I had a chance to talk for a short while before I introduced him to my client. As I spoke with Roy, trying to learn about his approach and what he had to offer, I began to get the sense that this was an extraordinary man. It was clear that he was a healer. His approach wasn’t clinical, it wasn’t medical, and it wasn’t even intellectual. It was spiritual and intuitive; what he offered came from his heart, not his head, and it what just what my soul needed.

As we spoke together it occurred to me that this man could help me heal. This is amazing, since up until this conversation I wasn’t even aware of my own addictions!  I had searched for “inner peace” but never for healing from the addictions and obsessions which were blocking me from that peace. I was in such denial that I only became aware of the obsession with food after I met Roy.

Driving home that afternoon I felt peaceful and realized that I wasn’t obsessing about the different restaurant signs and the foods they were offering, as I usually was. FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER MY MIND WAS QUIET. The contrast allowed me to see how obsessed with food I truly had been. I had buried my pain under 50 extra pounds and the façade of a professional persona and cheery disposition.

Ironically, I had been teaching women and girls to love their bodies the way they are, and had convinced myself that I loved my body…all 170 pounds of it. I had lulled myself into believing that I was ok with my weight and therefore rarely tried to lose weight. But when I felt safe and in the presence of Love and Truth, I saw that I was simply in a state of denial. There was so much about my life that was not ok; so many things that I desperately wanted to change. I JUST DIDN’T KNOW HOW. It’s amazing what we’ll settle for when we don’t think there’s any better way.

It was so exciting to know that I didn’t have to settle any longer. The low self-esteem, the deep shame, the unhealthy sexual behavior, the uncontrollable emotional eating…it could all be healed.

My life these past four months has been a whirlwind of change. I have embraced a new world of self-exploration through the mentorship of Roy Nelson and Metasteps. The results continue to amaze me! My inner healing has affected all areas of my life: my income has increased; I am saving money and have more money in the bank than I’ve ever had; I have an inner confidence I’ve always longed for; my intuition and inspiration is becoming keener by the day, and I’m a better psychologist than ever. I see God working everywhere in my life and I am watching miracles unfold. The biggest one of all is that I’m dropping my excess weight—effortlessly! I’m no longer obsessed nor medicating my feelings with food. This is all by the grace of God and the wisdom, love and patience of my angel, friend and mentor, Roy Nelson.

Dear Ask It:

I’m a social worker and I work many hours. By the end of the day I feel like I could eat a house…and I almost do! What can I do to gain control?
~ Spent in Sacramento

Dear Spent:

I know the scenario well: you work all day tending to the needs of others; pour your heart into letting others know they are loved; skip lunch because there simply isn’t time to stop and eat; put off eating dinner because, well, there’s just one more project that needs to be finished; grumble a bit on your drive home because you aren’t appreciated for all you do; and make up for this fact, and for the meals you missed, with a hefty binge of your favorite foods—after all, YOU DESERVE IT.

It’s time for a change, isn’t it? If you don’t like the price you’re paying for the recognition you’re not getting, if you are ready to put your needs first, so that others get the WHOLE YOU, and not the remnants of what was once you, stop. That’s right, STOP. Stop and replenish your well. Give yourself the gift of a more sane work schedule, more rest, and three proper meals. And learn the value of saying “no” once in a while (or more often than that)! If you don’t take care of yourself, no one else can or will. It’s your call.

Health Tips
(Please forward to everyone you know!)

If you’re stressed, tired and doing too much, your eating habits are probably showing it. And it’s a vicious cycle: stress=overeating=stress=overeating. There isn’t just one thing you can do to stop this pattern, there are many. While taking care of yourself by slowing down is a MUST, in the process of doing so, try these simple tips:

10 Tips for Stress-free Eating

  1. Don’t skip meals.
  2. Eat three meals a day.
  3. Sit down when you eat.
  4. Say a prayer or consciously breathe for 10 seconds before you begin to eat.
  5. When you want to overeat ask yourself: “What am I really hungry for?”
  6. Save money, calories and time: pack a lunch.
  7. Don’t eat at your desk while working…take a real lunch break.
  8. Don’t assume “free” food is free…we usually pay a dear price.
  9. Don’t eat food you don’t feel good about eating just because others are.
  10. Remember that the “Clean Plate Club” disbanded when you were 9!
